John Gascot

I am a Queer Caribbean-born Puerto Rican artist currently residing and creating in Pinellas County, Florida. I paint visual narratives which combine long-established painting styles such as Cubism, Folk and Pop. My work is also influenced by numerous global art forms. I aim to blur divisive cultural and gender lines in efforts to promote diversity. My paintings are primarily created on canvas using acrylic paints but increasingly include aerosol, ink and other mixed media. In the past most my work reflected tradition and cultural folklore. Today I mainly focus on figurative subjects which include the local community, outcasts and the disenfranchised. I feel a great need to capture moments and stories that might otherwise be overlooked. I passionately believe that art should be accessible to all and that everyone should find themselves represented in and by it.

Queer Latin American/Caribbean artist John Gascot spent the first twelve years of his life in Puerto Rico, a fact to which he attributes his love of bold color. While he creates in a variety of styles, including Painterly and Geometric Abstractions, Latin Pop paintings are his signature. He affectionately coined the style "Latin Pop" after years of development. The series combines elements of Pop, Cubism and Folk and is often flavored with a Latin/Global sensibility. John’s Latin Pop paintings combine various global influences in contemporary narratives, blurring cultural lines which divide us. The figures in his works are often large and curvaceous. Their mass speaks more about strength and presence than actual size. He strives to create art that is accessible and promotes diversity while simultaneously celebrating and challenging social and gender roles dictated by various cultures. His work aims to be accessible and promote diversity.
