Much of my work is created based on a theme or inspiration. My art style is mosaic mixed media where I use broken glass and incorporate found objects of different shapes, sizes and textures. This mosaic mixed media piece, Reflection of the Soul, created for ARTout encourages the individual to reflect on their difference’s… different colors if you will…..through the reflection of the self.

Title/Medium: Reflection of the Soul [Mosaic Mixed Media]

"The heart is a part of the Soul…this mosaic heart uses the colors of the rainbow to represent all souls. The mirrors reflect each soul that looks into it. As a lesbian I have found my power in looking at and accepting myself. Creating art nourishes my soul …hoping this piece does the same for each viewer.

I see the journey of myself and others who are LGBTQ+ as one that starts from the inside,,. the heart. As a teacher I was very closeted, in the beginning of my career, as many professional, I think, might feel they have to be. As I reflected on who I genuinely was it became apparent to me that only by reflecting my self/soul would it truly free me to be me! I normalized my life with colleagues and it became refreshing. My piece Reflections of Soul uses rainbow colors and mirrors to reflect who I am within my soul and hopefully as others look into the piece they will see their true selves and reflect this to others."

I began creating mosaics about 20 years ago when a birdbath cracked and a relative suggested I mosaic it to hide the crack. She lead me through the process and I was hooked. As a self taught mosaic artist I create what I love..bright colors, birds, hearts, double hearts, mixed media/found items. I have displayed my work in ARTpool Gallery, at Celebration of the Arts where my mosaic skates hung in Amale Arena through a hockey season, and created a Gecko for Gecko Fest in Gulfport. In 2013 my wife, Kathy, who was a stained glass artist, and I established Moonstar Glass and Sun Mosaics on Facebook. Her passing from ALS in 2023 was devastating but continuing my art has saved me!
