Dr. Beverly L. Boyarsky

Photography allows me to capture the pure essence of what is actually seen by the naked eye,” said Dr. Boyarsky. “My camera is an extension of me, empowering me to express my passion for life in all its glory and pain, while evoking deep emotion from my audience.

Title/Medium: Skyway Pride [Photography]

"As a lesbian photographer, my camera is an extension of me, empowering me to express my passion for life in all its glory and pain, while evoking deep emotion from my audience.

Growing up in the 70s, I had to hide being my authentic self and it caused many health issues both physically and mentally. I was fired for being gay from a job I loved, and struggled to fit into a world that discriminated against who I was. After coming out to the world as a spokesperson at the 1994 Gay Games, I never looked back and promised that I would show the world the beauty of living authentically through activism and my photography.

When I moved to Florida in 2021 from New York, life for me turned back in time to a place of discrimination and hate. But I remained vigilant, focused and true to myself. Performing as a drag king and winning the title of Mr. Come Out St. Pete solidified my cause and with my camera, began shooting the beauty of diversity in my new home state.

I made it my mission last June to hire a boat captain to take me to the Skyway Bridge to capture the Pride colors in all its glory. I was so moved and overwhelmed witnessing those colors shining brightly in the night sky. My photo captures not only the colors on the bridge, but the reflection on the water of how we, as a LGBTQIA plus community, continue to stand strong against hate and shine as bright as the sun."
