Basketry is often placed in the “craft” category but I consider many forms of basketry to be “art”. Traditional, functional baskets have evolved into pieces that express individualism, beauty, emotion and aesthetic appeal.

Artist Statement about the Piece (s) Submitted
Title/Medium: “Heartstopper” [Pine Needle Basketry]

"When I create, I choose materials that call to me and then produce a piece by allowing creative energy to flow from my soul to make something that I find beautiful. I believe that the idea of soul as an energy revealed in a piece of artwork can allow you to view and create art in a different way. As a queer woman, my art reflects my soul’s energy. My goal is to challenge people to view my art and find beauty through the unique expression of an LGBTQ+ artist."

Title/Medium: “Monochromatic” [Pine Needle Basketry]

I began basketmaking in 1994 using flat reed. When I retired, I taught myself wicker basketry. I focused on creating my own basket designs until the pandemic, when I learned pine needle basketry. I am Vice President of the Tampa Bay Basketmakers Guild and teach pine needle basketry classes.
